Strategic Planning and Assessment

Strategic Planning & Assessment Support Program

Advancing the departments of Kinesiology through strategic planning and assessment

Institutions of higher education are faced with challenges to meet demands for increased student enrollment, expanded research productivity, and higher expectations for accreditation and accountability. Institutions have adopted strategic planning and assessment processes to meet these challenges and have held the academic departments responsible for using planning and assessment to improve effectiveness and efficiency in their teaching, research, and service. However, for strategic planning to be an effective method for guiding departments, the departmental administrators, faculty, and staff also must be engaged in the process. Universities find it helpful to consult with strategic planning specialists external to the institution to help faculty understand and use strategic planning. The American Kinesiology Association (AKA) is pleased to offer workshops on strategic planning and assessment to its member Departments of Kinesiology.

The AKA Strategic Planning and Assessment Support Program will provide Departments of Kinesiology a resource to help advance their departments by establishing, using, and sustaining a meaningful strategic planning process. The services provided through this program are tailored to the specific needs of the individual department. In general, the program will provide support in three stages: Preparation: Overview of current university processes and departmental needs; Workshop: One or two day on-campus planning retreat for department; Review: Follow-up on the department’s planning and assessment activities. This program is provided to AKA member departments without charge (other than travel expenses incurred with the on-campus visit). Planning and assessment support beyond what is offered in this program is available with consulting fees negotiated.

Dr. T. Gilmour Reeve, AKA Executive Director, coordinates the Strategic Planning and Assessment Support Program. He works with other experienced kinesiology administrators to deliver a quality planning workshop for the AKA member department. Prior to his retirement in 2017, Dr. Reeve served as Associate Vice President and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Louisiana State University and as Director of Strategic Planning in the Office of the President at Texas Tech University. All AKA workshop facilitators have extensive experience as kinesiology department chairs and/or other administrative appointments in their colleges and universities.
