AKA Leadership Workshop and Pre-Workshop Descriptions:

Foundational to the success of a department are the faculty it employs. Successful faculty teach classes that attract students to major in kinesiology, conduct research that generates new knowledge and accompanying revenue through ICR, contribute to critical ongoing department functions and new initiatives, provide significant service to the profession and community at large, and actively promote a positive department culture through their words, actions, and treatment of others. Success, however, is not automatic, and not all faculty achieve success in all areas. Facilitating success requires strong department leadership and varying levels of financial resources.

The focus of the 2025 AKA Workshop, Faculty Success in Higher Education, will address topics related to successful hiring, recruiting retention, and mentoring; helping faculty achieve high research and teaching success; managing challenging people; measuring and valuing faculty through the annual review process; promoting staff success; and addressing faculty, staff, and administrator mental health and work life balance. Presenters will include university presidents, deans, department heads, and faculty. The Workshop will be highlighted by keynote speaker and award-willing and best-selling author, Mary Abbajay, President of Careerstone Group. This interactive session titled “Managing Up, Down, & Across: Working Successfully with Others” will address proven strategies and techniques to increase cooperation and collaboration between those who have different power levels, perspectives, needs, wants, and personalities. The Fireside Chat will focus on the geo-political landscape of higher education and will feature Kevin Guskiewicz, President of Michigan State University, and Gayle Hutchinson, President Emerita of California State University, Chico.

The Workshop will infuse DEI throughout all sessions, will include members of the AKA Leadership Institute, and will address the nuances of doctoral, masters, and bachelors degree-granting institutions.

The Undergraduate Education Network and Graduate Education Network will host the Pre-Workshop that will include a variety of presentations and feature a special session on artificial intelligence by Marcio Oliveira, Assistant Vice President for Academic Technology and Innovation at the University of Maryland.
