Leadership Institutes

The American Kinesiology Association (AKA) promotes and enhances kinesiology as a unified field of study and advances its many applications. AKA does this by advocating for kinesiology at national and international levels, and by supporting member departments through educational opportunities and resource materials, including an annual workshop for university administrators in kinesiology. This annual AKA Leadership Workshop is widely regarded as the nation’s premiere conference for kinesiology department chairs, deans, and faculty who assist with the administration of kinesiology programs.

Building upon the success of the AKA Leadership Workshop, we introduced the AKA Leadership Institute, in 2019. With continued growth and success, the AKA introduced two more tiers in 2026: Mentoring for Executive Leadership Positions Program and Emerging Leader Institute.

The AKA Leadership Institutes provide a tiered model of career development to advance departments in Higher Education.

Emerging Leader Institute

The Emerging Leader Institute utilizes a mentoring model to provide exceptional training and networking for faculty leading department programs (e.g. program directors, education (undergraduate or graduate) directors, assistant/associate department chairs, those actively pursuing chair positions along with other such positions) and emerging faculty leaders who aspire to advance toward such positions in the future. The focus of this program is toward more early and mid-career faculty. The goal of the Emerging Leader Institute is to provide professional development for faculty currently in or interested in initial departmental leadership opportunities.

Departmental Leader Institute/Department Leader Institute

The Leadership Institute utilizes a mentoring model to provide exceptional training and networking for current department chairs, new department chairs, and incoming chairs. The focus of this program is toward more senior faculty. The goal of the Leader Institute is to provide department chairs with the skills to advance Kinesiology in their institutions.

Mentoring for Executive Leadership Positions (Dean, Provost, President)

The American Kinesiology Association’s Leadership Institute is pleased to add a year-long Mentoring for Executive Leadership Positions program for kinesiologists aspiring to senior leadership positions at the Dean, Provost, and Presidential levels. Participants (Fellows) will learn from renowned kinesiology leaders in higher education, and seasoned mentors both within and outside the program. The goals of the Mentoring for Executive Leadership program include:

  • Develop expertise and skill in multiple areas relevant to senior leadership in an academic institution.
  • Experience broad leadership training, peer mentoring, and networking across American Kinesiology Association member institutions.
  • Contribute new knowledge and new elective practices to benefit all American Kinesiology Association member institutions.
