Strategic Planning & Unit Review Consulting Services

AKA Strategic Planning and Unit Review Consulting Service Overview

The AKA has a history of facilitating strategic planning for its member units. Dating back to 2009, former AKA President Gil Reeve visited AKA units and assisted department leaders and faculty in various strategic planning activities.  This service provides our member units with a resource to help advance their departments by establishing, using, and sustaining a meaningful strategic planning process.  In addition, the service will help advance those member units who elect to conduct an external review of their department through the employment of AKA consultants.

The AKA Executive Committee charged a committee to review and revise the structure of the process.  Led by former AKA President Nancy Williams, fellow AKA colleagues developed a plan for the future of the association’s strategic planning service.  We thank committee members Lara Duke, John Bartholomew, Mary Rudisill, Al Smith, Penny McCullagh and Dan Schmidt for their development of the plan.  We appreciate Nancy’s leadership of this group.

This initiative was in response to frequent inquiries from AKA member units regarding topics such as strategic planning, program reviews, curricular modifications and reviews, department name change advice; unit reorganization; and other strategic initiatives.  It was supported by data collected via an AKA sponsored survey during Fall 2024 and presented at the 2025 workshop. The survey garnered a total of n=53 responses comprised of 31 doctoral granting, 15 master’s granting, and 7 undergraduate degree granting institutions.  It suggested that member units were in favor of the association’s engagement in helping member units with strategic planning in various forms as presented below.

Hence, our goal is to provide Kinesiology leaders of AKA member units with training through our annual pre-workshop and our webinar series in the value and administration of strategic planning activities.  Also, we have expanded the consulting service to units interested in engaging in external reviews of their departments/schools. We have established a cadre of consultants whose expertise will be of benefit to our members.  Please refer to the button below to review the strategic planning services options AKA will offer its members.
